Right (at least concerning the problem)

The reason for me putting the "*" in one cell and the text
in another is that this way it aligns nicely for long lines;
this could be handled with i18n slots, allowing for
language-dependent solutions where <th>*:</th><td>(the
text)</td> is not appropriate.
